Medication-Assisted Treatment

The Ernest E. Kennedy Center provides Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid and alcohol use through a contract with a medical provider.  Treatment includes both medication and individual and group counseling.

Helping Others

Medications used in MAT at the Kennedy Center are Vivitrol (by injection), Naltrexone (generic, oral version of Vivitrol), Suboxone, and Antabuse.

The medical providers will meet with you and determine the best medication for your treatment.

Frequent Questions

How Do I Get Started?

Call the front desk at 843-761-8272 to schedule an intake and assessment.  You will meet with an assessment counselor, who will determine your next steps and assist you with scheduling an appointment with medical staff when appropriate.

Why can’t I just get medication-why do I have to have counseling?

Medication is only part of your treatment.  Counseling will help you learn new skills for managing life’s challenges to support your long-term recovery from addiction.  In addition, group counseling provides connection with and support from others who are recovering from addiction.

Will I have to take the medication for the rest of my life?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is designed to help you stabilize and heal — not to keep you on medication forever unless it’s truly needed.

Suboxone helps manage cravings and prevents withdrawal while your body and brain recover from the effects of opioid use. During this time, you’re also building coping skills, support systems, and confidence in your recovery.

Some people choose to stay on Suboxone long-term because it helps them maintain stability, and that’s okay. Others taper off gradually. If and when you’re ready, your medical provider will work closely with you to slowly reduce the dose in a safe, comfortable way.

The goal is long-term recovery — and your treatment plan can be adjusted to fit what’s best for you.

Do You Have Narcan?

Yes.  Narcan is available at no charge.  Just ask your counselor or the front office staff and they will help you with this.

I don’t have insurance. Is there financial assistance for MAT services?

Yes.  There are grants available to assist with paying for your treatment.  You will need to talk with the finance staff for information on financial assistance.
