PHILOSOPHY OF TREATMENT

The Kennedy Center is a progressive agency and interested in the most sophisticated and effective treatment methods to address the needs of chemically dependent clients.  The primary model adopted by the Kennedy Center is the CENAPS ã Developmental Model of Recovery (DMR).  The DMR, created after many years of research, identified that chemically dependent individuals progress through six stages, or phases, of recovery.  Each phase of recovery produces different tasks that the chemically dependent person must complete before moving on to the next phase of recovery.  Premature attempts to move to the next phase can produce a relapse (becoming dysfunctional in recovery) and eventual return to active use of the drug, physical and/or emotional collapse, or death.

The DMR stages are:

  • Transition
  • Stabilization
  • Early Recovery
  • Middle Recovery
  • Late Recovery
  • Maintenance

Transition Phase is the last stage of active use and the first stage of recovery for the chemically dependent person.  This phase is marked by the most significant symptoms of chemical dependency: denial and resistance. The Stabilization stage is marked by recognizing and internalizing that AOD use is a problem, but lacking skills and techniques in relapse prevention and coping.  Early Recovery is focused on beginning to build a foundation for recovery.  Considering the level of services provided at the Kennedy Center, primary emphasis is placed on the Transition, Stabilization, and Early Recovery stages.  Note:  You can learn more about the DMR and the CENAPS model of treatment by clicking here.
